Is it usually advisable to buy the "best" (highest correction) objectives that your budget will allow?
Yes, but with a few caveats: If you are doing mostly observations of specimens thicker than several microns, W-PLAN/N-PLAN or W-PLAN F/N-PLAN F may serve quite well because they have greater depth of field than comparable magnification PLAN APO. For colour photomicrography, PLAN F are capable of rendering better colour images than can PLAN. For the finest colour photomicrography (and observation) of minute details, PLAN APO are the best choice but several times more expensive than the PLAN F.
